So today was the day we left Obertrum, left Salzburgerland and headed West. Joanne arrived shy of midnight (after getting off at the wrong train station and having to cycle further through the forest in the dark). She was starving, and I was still sorting stuff and packing a bit, and we ended up continuing preparations until 2am by which point we gave up.. 5 hours later we got up to continue, with the stated aim of leaving no later than 11am. Unfortunately we had overestimated our abilities and it was eventually 13:30, as the post office reopened and we posted the remainder of Zara’s belongings back to the UK, that we finally pedalled away!
With thunder clouds and sun accompanying us we made our steady way towards Bernau am Chiemsee. Keeping the Alps always on our left, we navigated our way semi-sucessfully with just a couple of ‘detours’ and one very silly navigation decision taking us down along into and through a river valley. It was beautiful; a bit of alternative terrain and a good few pretty picnic spots. But sadly such detours mixed with late starts are not conducive to fast cycling and instead of reaching Bernau we are overnighting in Traunstein.
Accommodation finding was very easy thanks to a modern tourist information with a computer outside… Well, having said accommodation finding was easy, we got a bit confused with Traunstein’s design with lifts going down most sides out of the city square and then the roads circling their way around the outsides of it…
We are staying in a lovely little pension up in Ettendorf, and after unpacking amd showers we headed off to find food and explore the not so vibrant nightlife. We got food in a small Chinese, but Joanne managed to count money soooo slowly that the waitress didnt even want us to pay the entire bill! On the plus side, she got rid of a huge number of coins!
